How Earrings Became My Superpower | Spark & Saga

How Earrings Became My Superpower | Spark & Saga

If my ears are bare, you can bet it’s not my best day.

I didn’t always see how my earrings were linked to my mood. I just thought I liked them because I’ve always enjoyed dressing up and matching my outfits.

Some days, I become a walking rainbow. Other days, I slip into a simple black dress, but I almost always pop on hot pink earrings for a spark.

My earrings can’t fix the challenges waiting for me, but they remind me I’ve handled tough situations before.

Every Chapter Had a Color

When I look back, I can see different chapters of my life marked by color.

Bright yellow and blue helped me get through the pandemic. I spent those days looking for blue water and sunlight, escaping to nature whenever I needed a break from being indoors.
Purple and teal became my colors as I grew into adulthood and accepted getting older. During that time, I went to therapy, journaled, meditated, and listened to every self-help audiobook and YouTube video I could find.

I felt wrapped in a cocoon, quietly preparing for whatever transformation was waiting for me.

Then came hot pink.

Hot pink became my color after I left journalism and started working in marketing. There isn’t much hot pink in a newsroom.

Sometimes I found myself in rooms where I didn’t feel welcome or in tough meetings where I needed more confidence. On those days, I wore hot pink or my favorite earrings. They helped me feel like myself, and that made it easier to face whatever was ahead.

It might sound small, but the right earrings could turn my whole day around. They gave me the spark to speak up, survive meetings, and refuse to blend into the background. That’s why I call earrings my superpower.

They help me show up as myself, especially on the days when that feels hardest.

Yes, I Had a Minimalist Phase

There was a phase when I binged Matt D’Avella videos and dreamed of kitchen counters as empty as a blank page.

I cleared out so much clutter. That season taught me to pause and ask why I buy what I do. I still skip random thrift-store mugs, but if one is special, adorable, and brightens my day, it just might come home with me.

Minimalism taught me to be intentional, and I’m grateful for that.

Minimalism also got mixed up with my idea of being an adult. Clean counters, neutral rooms, and owning less felt like proof that I was a responsible grown-up.

But I needed more Jigglypuffs.

I wanted action figures from the anime I love. I wanted colorful clothes, strange patterns, shelves full of objects that made me smile, and accessories that started conversations.
These things remind me of what lights me up.

I had to grow up quickly. There were things I missed out on when I was younger. Now that I have my own money, I can create the space I want, wear the clothes I like, and fill my life with small, bright reminders that it belongs to me.

Finding My Way Home

I did not truly grasp how much earrings meant to me until about two years ago, before Spark & Saga was even a dream.

I lost my job. I walked away from journalism, a path I once thought would last forever. I was searching for myself and trying to redefine what home meant.

When I looked back on my life, one thing kept showing up.

Earrings.

Most of my earrings were 99-cent treasures from beauty supply stores. At one point, I had five drawers overflowing, each one sorted by color and size.

When I moved to Arizona in 2018, it was harder to find beauty supply stores. The earrings I did find were often tarnished, plain, or missing the color and personality I loved. They were cheap, but they didn’t feel worth buying.

I still have three drawers of earrings I’ve collected over the years, and now I also have a drawer of earrings I made myself.

For me, that drawer is a sign that I’ve found my way back.

When I was homeless, earrings were not what got me through. Survival was all that mattered. But once I found my footing and moved into my first apartment, having something of my own meant the world.

So I filled my apartment with earrings, each pair a tiny celebration of becoming me.
Fashion is not about big brands or price tags. I care about color, texture, and how something feels against my skin. I care about feeling proud when I look in the mirror and see myself reflected back.

I am a Libra rising, after all.

Wear the Earrings

Thus Spark and Saga was born.

Made especially for anyone who’s ever wondered if they were too old, too serious, too professional, or too noticeable to wear something fun.

Wear it anyway.

Wear the earrings that make you feel powerful. Sip the silly little drink that lifts your afternoon. Show off your anime figures. Choose the mug that brightens your morning.
Find what brings you back to yourself and invest in it.

Adulthood already piles enough on our plates. We work, slog through traffic, stretch our money, stay reachable, absorb the news, and face a world that sometimes feels like it is unraveling.

Now, I reach for the bright dress.
I pick chartreuse with magenta.
I choose the Jigglypuffs.

And when I need to find my way back to myself, I put on the earrings.
